Top Memorabilia Auction Strikes a Chord With Local Media

Acclaimed ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill died in 2021, leaving behind hundreds of items from a decadeslong career in music and as a sports and entertainment memorabilia collector. When his estate decided to auction off his remarkable collection, they tapped globally renowned Julien’s Auctions, which pinpointed Hill’s hometown of Dallas as the greatest draw for public and collector interest. Julien’s Auctions and Genuine Article collaborated to execute a multiday pop-up exhibition and a three-day live auction open to the public, designed to be art gallery-esque in its display and serve as host for a series of live events featuring VIP guests, interested bidders, and ZZ Top fans.

Approach

Hired less than four weeks to the date of launch, Genuine Article quickly devised a plan to generate multiple moments of press attention for the auction and gain significant foot traffic to the open-to-the-public pop-up exhibit. We identified reporters in the North Texas area covering music, community events, culture, fashion, and local events, with a tailored approach for each. Genuine Article ideated an exclusive press preview event of the pop-up, with access to the first sights of the exhibition and interviews with Julien’s spokespeople for major broadcast affiliates and prominent area print publications. We used part of the total campaign budget to hire a local photographer, which enabled deeper visual storytelling around expected high-ticket auction items. We leveraged community events reporters and “to-do-list” aggregators to bolster attendance-driving efforts for the exhibition. Together with music and culture reporters, we drove anticipation for the first night of the live auction. Genuine Article staffed each of three live auction events, writing and distributing end-of-day auction recap press releases in real time to ensure accurate sale details were in the hands of interested press.

Results

In just four short weeks, Genuine Article generated significant exposure for Julien’s Auction, which led to hundreds of Dusty Hill and ZZ Top fans experiencing a piece of music icon legacy. Media hits included every major DFW broadcast affiliate station, with 21 outlets in total across online, broadcast, radio, and podcast covering the event. It attracted more than 3,000 bidders, with press coverage resulting in a spike during the opening of the pop-up, night one of the auction, and after it concluded. The Dusty Hill auction itself was record-breaking — it represented (as of December 2023) the highest-grossing single artist auction for Julien’s Auctions, with 100% of auction lots sold.
